Common questions
My disposal just hums. Can I fix it myself?
Sometimes. First, turn off the switch. Then look under the disposal for a small hex hole in the center and use the little wrench that came with it to turn the flywheel back and forth. Press the red reset button on the bottom. If it still only hums, something's stuck or the motor's failing, and that's worth a call before you burn it out.
Is it cheaper to repair or replace?
Depends on the failure. A jam, a tripped reset, or a leaking gasket is a straightforward repair. But if the motor is dead or the housing is cracked, replacing the unit is the smarter move because a patched-up old motor tends to fail again. We'll tell you honestly which one you're looking at.
What shouldn't I put down the disposal?
Skip coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous stuff like celery and onion skins, grease, and starchy peels like potato. Those either clog the chamber or coat the drain line. Run cold water while it grinds and for a few seconds after to flush everything through.
